Got the ST build of the XT2 - Installing Windows 7

Got the XT2 up and running - windows 7 installs fine, but quite a few things outstanding in device manager, a quick scan of the Vista Drivers fixes that nicely

Now installing the N-trig software, supports multi touch gestures,

I am very curious about the XT2-specifications. Our company is standardized on Dell and for my line of work (Functional Analysis) I absolutely need a tablet, but the XT1 is ehh... sub-optimal. Very, very interested in your experiences and the new tablet. Running Win7 on a HP M400 tablet that needs to be replaced....

Will be doing a full review soon - any particular details you are after ?

Well... those multi-gestures are very cool :-)

Besides that I need the machine to be able to run large Virtual PC images with some performance left.

I am curious about noise under high load, that M400 *kills* me because of the fan blowing loud if processor load is high for > 10 minutes.

Last thing is battery-performance. How long can I use it without outlet power? Maybe including the extra battery pack :-)

Screen resoltion for most tablets nowadays is 1280 x 800, but there exist some 1400 x 1050 tablets (like the M400). The XT2 is 1280 x 800 only?

Does the Math Input Panel work and is the pen any better than other the one on other tablets?

The Math Control Panel Works Just fine -tried a few formulas and it seemed to recognized them just fine - also the edit capabilities ( for when it cant make out my writing ) was good.

The XT2 Pen is similar to the XT one, has 3 different nibs depending on your writing style.

Hi Guillaume,

I also have a Lattitude XT2 with Win7. I'm gonna return it because it came with an ugly darker band in the screen. I don't know how to describe it better... It's like a water mark in the screen, about half a centimiter wide, and it ocupies all the screen... At fist I thought it was something about the win7 beta, but it also appears in the bios setup so...

I just installed Win7 + ntrig beta multitouch drivers. That left 2 missing drivers in the device manager:
1. 5880 - Thats the name. I guess this is the fingersensor driver, as it does not work.
2. SM Bus Controller.

Did you manage to install this correctly?
I'm specially interested in trying Win7 finger login capabilities.

Answering some of the questions in other comments:

Edwin, I can't help with the noise as I have not loaded it very much. May be I game a little before returning it.
the screen is 1200x800, sorry there.
The worst is the battery performance, specially if you order the extra bright model, like I did. It can be used even outdoors, but I only lasts 3 hours with the 6cell baterry.
My girlfriend has an XT with the extra battery and it doesn't improve much... 5 and a half hours with windows vista.

Eisber: The math imput panel is fine, some troubles with integrals (i'm not sure if this is the right word in english). One problem with this, I can not paste directly to onenote. I have to go to word and then copy/paste again... But that is onenote issue.

The pen is just like de XT's... I have both and the main diference is Memory bandwith (DDR2 vs DDR3) CPU and wide of the screen. I mean not the resolution but the thickness of the screen (XT2 is half the XT). The xt2 has also an eSATA port that I didn't even know about...

The PC is just fine (not very powerfull but ok for average use). The great thing is about the multitouch digitaizer... it's just amazing...

Hope I could help.

CHeers to all.

Jur.

Hi Everyone,

I have a XT2 running Windows 7 and so far the computer is running pretty smoothly.

I do have however some questions.

Screen protection - Has anybody installed a screen protector? I have heard that PPC Techs (www.ppctechs.com) has very good ones indeed. Anyone knows it? The problem is that they do not have it for the XT2 screen size. I think the screen size is 264 mm x 170 mm but I am not sure if I measured it right.

WWAN - I have ordered my XT2 with WWAN but I am really confused about it. Do I still have to use a WWAN card to use a SIM card with the computer? If yes, what are the WWAN cards compatible with XT2? At the beginning, I thought the option of WWAN would make it ready to use with SIM cards, but I have noticed that there is a slot for WWAN.

Sorry for posing all those questions, and I really appreciate some help on that.

Cheers,

Marcio

Hi,

I have the WWAN option in my Latitude XT2 working with Windows 7. Under the battery (to the left) is slot for the SIM card. If you put it in there, you need the Dell Connnection Manager and you are ready to go. It took me a couple of reboots to get the WWAN working (and the use of FN-F7 or so)

Hello :) I just installed Win7 on my new Dell latitude xt2. There are some things missing that were present in Vista. An example is when I close the lid and turn the screen tablet style. The view on the screen doesn't change to vertical viewing. Is this a problem anyone else has experienced?

HI,

I also have the Xt2, but the Win7 RC is a problematic one with drivers.

Card reader won't work.
Touch won't work, digitizer almost useless (jumps around wildly).
Tablet buttons don't work.

I cannot install most Vista drivers because the setup then claims i cannot install them on this verison of windows, yet it worked perfectly on the beta build 7077.

Do you have a solution, anyone?

Hi,

@ cardreader: mark the driver setup with "Vista Compatiblity" and the setup goes through.

@ random jumps: Install the latest touch drivers from n-trig. With touch enabled I saw random jumps (and clicks) with an XT2 and the HP Tablet. I have touch disabled most of the time. The stylus works for me just fine.
